Travel

Florence is well-connected with the rest of Italy and with Europe, and is easy to get to by air or land. In the last few years there has been a significant increase in traffic in and out of Florence's Vespucci Airport, and the infrastructure and facilities are constantly being upgraded.

Florence is also a key node on the Italian railway network. It has good connections with the main cities in the north, while to the south Rome is only about an hour and a half away. Work on the Bologna-Florence stretch of the high-speed railway line (TAV, Treni Alta Velocita) is at an advanced stage, and a new station is due to be built in Florence.
The A1 motorway, the main road artery linking the north and south of the country, runs past Florence, which has four exits. A third lane is currently being built on the Barberino-Incisa stretch of the A1. The A11 motorway and the Florence-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway link the city with the west (Tyrrhenian) coast.

Getting to Florence by air

Amerigo Vespucci Airport is situated on the north-west outskirts of Florence, just 4 kilometres from the city centre. It is a 15- to 20-minute journey into the centre by taxi or the SITA/ATAF bus shuttle operating between the airport and the central railway station. Vespucci Airport is connected to some of Europe's major airports: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Bucharest, Frankfurt, Geneva, London Gatwick, Madrid, Munich, Paris C. de Gaulle, Timisoara, Tirana, Vienna. There are also flights to and from the following Italian cities: Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Milan Malpensa, Olbia, Palermo, Rome Fiumicino, Turin and Verona.

Pisa's Galilei Airport is about 80 kilometres from Florence. There are direct flights from the most important European and Italian airports. The airport is linked to Florence by rail and road: a direct train service runs from the airport to Florence central railway station (Firenze S.M.N.), and there is also a TerraVision bus service. The journey time is approximately 1 hour, 20 minutes.

Getting to Florence by car

If you decide to come to Florence by car, the following information may prove useful. It is worth pointing out that the area of greatest tourist interest coincides with the ZTL ('zona a traffico limitato'), a restricted traffic area controlled by a network of video cameras. If you need to get to pre-booked accommodation, inform the hotel in advance and they will pass on the details of your vehicle (number plate, etc.) to the local city police.

For information about the motorway network, tolls etc., visit the web site of Autostrade per l'Italia: http://www.autostrade.it/

To find the car park that is most convenient and suitable for your needs, visit the website of Firenze Parcheggi at http://www.firenzeparcheggi.it/
